Pagine VIII, 80 con 1 tavola fuori testo a piena pagina incisa in calcografia. Copia lievemente brunita, in alcuni punti con brunitura più intensa in corrispondenza dello specchio di stampa e dei margini, ma completa e parzialmente intonsa. Legatura coeva in tutta carta rosa. (1)Prima edizione, assai rara, di questo trattato dagli importanti risvolti nella storia della statistica. Legrende è infatti ritenuto l'ideatore del metodo dei minimi quadrati, sviluppato nel campo dell'astronomia come parte dell'analisi statistica per l'osservazione dei corpi celesti. La paternità del metodo venne discussa poiché Gauss ne rivendicava l'utilizzo già a partire dal 1795. «The method of least squares is the automobile of modern statistical analysis: despite its limitations [...] this method and its numerous variations carry the bulk of statistical analyses. Adrien Marie Legrende published the method in 1805.
