A late italic carnelian engraved scarab set in a 19th century gold mounting. Head of Ulysses.

Bearded head of Ulysses with the pileus, facing left. Use of small globular elements for the nose, mouth, eyes and termination of the neck and the hat. Expressive and well engraved face despite the small dimension of the gem. Linear frame engraved around the effigy of the greek hero. Chip on the back of the beetle. Through hole. Slight wear marks. The stone is mounted on a swivel and chiseled 19th century gold seal. Rare subject.
