Curiosa copia in una legatura coeva di Oxford di questo lessico ebraico-latino assai popolare e più volte ristampato a cura del domenicano Sancte (Xantes) Pagnino qui edito dal tipografo umanista Christophe Plantin. Si tratta di una traduzione ed esposizione del glossario biblico Sefer ha-shorashim (Libro delle radici) di R. David Kimhi. Originariamente scritto come dizionario ebraico-latino per ministri cattolici, fu composto all'inizio del XVI secolo dal biblista domenicano San Pagnini e pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1529. Al dizionario è allegato anche un elenco di modelli di nominalizzazione e un elenco di nomi irregolari.
8vo(174 x 112mm). Marca tipografica al frontespizio, iniziali e fregi xilografici, caratteri ebraici e latini (alcune bruniture, il primo quaderno staccato e alcuni altri fogli debolmente attaccati). Pelle coeva Oxford in vitello scuro con tripla cornice a righe cieche alle copertine e il caratteristico tratteggio incrociato nei pannelli in testa e in coda al dorso (estremità graffiate con piccole perdite e generali difetti). Provenienza: numerose annotazioni coeve anche in ebraico all'ultima bianca e nel testo - Thomas Gatacre (1533-1593; nota di possesso coeva al frontespizio e annotazioni nel testo. Membro del parlamento inglese e proveniente da una famiglia fortemente cattolica di Gatacre Hall, Shropshire).

A popular and much reprinted Hebrew-Latin lexicon by the Domenican Sancte (Xantes) Pagnino printed by the humanist typographer Christophe Plantin. Epitome Thesauri Linguae Sanctae is a translation of and exposition on the Biblical glossary Sefer ha-shorashim (Book of Roots) by R. David Kimhi. Originally written as a Hebrew-Latin dictionary for Catholic ministers, it was composed during the early 16th-century by the Dominican Bible scholar St. Pagnini and published for the first time in 1529. Appended to the dictionary is a list of nominalization patterns and a list of irregular nouns. This lexicon had a great success and was frequently republished.

Hebrew and Roman type, text in Latin and Hebrew, woodcut printer's device on title, initials and headpieces (some browning, first gathering detched and a few other leaves just holding). Contemporary Oxford dark calf with a triple blind-ruled frame on each board and the distinctive cross hatching in the panels at head and tail (rubbed and with some general wear). Provenance: numerous contemporary annotations also in Hebrew to final blank and in the text - Thomas Gatacre (1533-1593; contemporary ownership inscription on title and annotations in the text. Member of the English Parliament and originally from a strongly Catholic family of Gatacre Hall, Shropshire).
