HAMILTON, William Douglas (1730-1803) - Collection of engravings from ancient vases mostly of pure Greek workmanship discovered in sepulchres in the kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Napoli: Tischbein, 1791-95.
Prima edizione in bella legatura dei primi tre volumi pubblicati di quest'importante serie di illustrazioni di vasi greci e magno-greci collezionati da William Hamilton, ambasciatore britannico presso il Regno delle due Sicilie. Purtroppo, parte della collezione qui illustrata affondò nei pressi di Scilla con la nave che la trasportava, la HMS Colossus, mentre i pezzi salvati furono venduti a Thomas Hope (1769-1831) celebre collezionista e "viveur" londinese.
Folio (480 x 375mm). 3 volumi (di 4). 1 volume: doppio frontespizio calcografico, in inglese e francese, 3 tavole (le ultime due numerate 2-3), 60 tavole numerate; 2 volume: doppio frontespizio calcografico, in inglese e francese, 4 tavole non numerate, 54 di 61 tavole (mancano la 15,22, 23, 28, 35, 44, 52); 3 volume: doppio frontespizio calcografico, in inglese e francese, 5 tavole non numerate, 60 tavole per un totale complessivo di 11 tavole non numerate e 174 (su 181) tavole numerate (bruniture e qualche macchia). Bella legatura coeva in piena pelle, ricca cornice dorata ai piatti, decori geometrici e titoli in oro su tassello al dorso, sguardie in carta colorata (difetti e screpolature). (3)

First edition in fine binding of the first published 3 volumes of this important series of illustrations of Greek and Magna Graecia vases collected by William Hamilton, British ambassador to the Kingdom of the two Sicilies. Unfortunately, part of the collection illustrated here sank near Scilla with the ship that carried it, the HMS Colossus, while the saved pieces were sold to Thomas Hope (1769-1831), a famous collector and London "viveur".

Fine contemporary calf, rich golden frame, geometric decorations and gilt titles on spine label, coloured endpapers (light wear and rubbing). (3)
