DODOENS, Rembert (1517-1585) - Stirpium historiae pemptades sex. Anversa: Plantin-Moretus, 1616.
Seconda edizione, quella definitiva, dell'opera di Dodoens, nonchè "l'ultimo e il più comprensivo libro di Botanica" (Hunt). Questa edizione include un maggior numero di illustrazioni rispetto alla prima. Plantin acquistò una parte dei legni, quelli già utilizzati nell'edizione in 8vo dell'erbario di Leonhard Fuch's, dalla vedova di Jan van der Loe, lo stampatore del Cruydeboek di Dodoen. Gli altri furono intagliati dall'artista Pieter van der Brocht la cui collezione, conservata presso la Staatsbibliothek di Berlino, costituisce una delle più importanti collezioni di illustrazioni di botanica del XVI secolo tuttora esistenti.
Folio (348 x 226mm). Frontespizio inciso in rame entro grande cornice architettonica con le figure di Teofrasto e Discoride, più di 1,300 illustrazioni botaniche incise in legno, iniziali xilografiche, marca tipografica in fine (senza ultima bianca, frontespizio con piccola perdita e restauro al margine esterno, leggermente corto come il secondo foglio, rinforzato e montato su brachetta insieme al secondo foglio e agli ultimi del primo quaderno, entrambi leggermente rovinati al margine esterno, piccolo strappetto al margine superiore del secondo foglio, alcune bruniture e fioriture). Mezza pelle moderna, piatti in carta marmorizzata. Provenienza: Henrici Rouven? Second and most definitive edition of Dodoens' "last and most comprehensive botanical work" (Hunt), including more illustrations than the first edition. Plantin acquired a portion of the blocks, those already used for the octavo edition of Leonhard Fuchs' herbal, from the widow of Jan van der Loe, the publisher of Dodoens' Cruydeboek. The rest were the work of the artist Pieter van der Borcht, whose collection of paintings in the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin forms one of the most important surviving collections of 16th-century flower paintings.

Engraved architectural title with figures of Theophrastus and Dioscorides, over 1,300 woodcuts in the text, Plantin's device on verso of final leaf, woodcut initials (without final blank, title with small loss in the margin, slightly shorter together with the second leaf, reinforced and mounted as the final two leaves of the first gathering, both slightly frayed in outer margin, some browning and spotting).
