Prima edizione di questo trattato sulle macchine illustrato da belle incisioni in legno a piena pagina. Celebre è la prima rappresentazione di una turbina a vapore e la prima applicazione del vapore a lavori comuni e utili (Dibner). Il volume fu di proprietà di William Chadwell Mylne, ingegnere e architetto che si occupò della pianificazione del quartiere di Islington a Londra.
4to (223 x 154mm). Frontespizio inciso in rame e 77 tavole xilografiche a piena pagina (leggermente brunito e con qualche occasionale traccia di umidità). Pelle a spruzzo posteriore, tagli a spruzzo (un po' rovinata, giunture lise). Provenienza: William Chadwell Mylne (una copia della stessa opera con exlibris di Mylne è stata battuta in asta da Christie's nel 2003. Ingegnere e architetto, era a capo della New River Company con la quale panificò la struttura di gran parte di Islington negli anni '20 del XIX secolo; 1781-1863, nota di dono datata 1820 a): - Watt (il celebre James Watt morì nell'agosto del 1819).

First edition of a scarce work on machines. 'This treatise on machinery is illustrated by 77 full-page plates, the most famous of which shows the first representation of a steam turbine as well as the first application of steam to useful work', states Dibner. 'Although a steam jet is used, with its kinetic energy applied to the vanes of a turbine rather than the expansive power of steam as applied to later engines, yet the very use of steam in motive power is of historical significance. The turbine shaft is shown geared down and ends in pestles for pounding materials in mortars. Many other machines are shown, including a reversing hoisting engine'. Dibner 175. The present copy belonged to William Chadwell Mylne, whom was responsable for the lay out of a large part of Islington during the 1820s.

Provenance: William Chadwell Mylne (another copy of the same work was auctioned at Christie's in 2003 with Mylne's bookplate.
