La bella coppa poggia su disco e mostra una decorazione epigrafica alternata a medaglioni con arabeschi smaltati di blu e rosso. Iscrizione: Dio è la luce dei cieli e della terra. La Sua luce è come una nicchia in cui si trova una lampada (verso incompleto, Corano 24:35) Il verso completo è il seguente: Allah è la luce dei Cieli e della Terra. La Sua luce è simile a quella di una nicchia in cui si trova una lampada, la lampada è in un cristallo, il cristallo è come una stella brillante; il suo combustibile viene da un albero benedetto, un olivo né orientale né occidentale, il cui olio sembra illuminare senza neppure essere toccato dal fuoco. E' luce su luce. Allah guida verso la Sua luce chi vuole Lui e propone agli uomini metafore. Allah è l'Onnipotente e l'Onnisciente. Quello appena citato è il verso della Sura An-Nur (La Luce) frequentemente riportato sulle lampade da moschea in quanto la connessione tra la luce ed Allah è esplicita in questo passaggio. Si può quindi presumere che, nonostante, per ragioni di spazio, il versetto sul nostro esemplare si interrompa, la funzione originaria di questo vetro fosse liturgica.

This beautiful cup is placed on a disc and shows an epigraphic decoration with medallions and blue-and-red enamelled arabesques. The inscription says, "Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The Parable of His Light is as if there were a Niche and within it a Lamp" (Quran, incomplete verse 24:35). The complete verse says, "Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The Parable of His Light is as if there were a Niche and within it a Lamp: the Lamp enclosed in Glass: the glass as it were a brilliant star: Lit from a blessed Tree, an Olive, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil is well-nigh luminous, though fire scarce touched it: Light upon Light! Allah doth guide whom He will to His Light: Allah doth set forth Parables for men: and Allah doth know all things". This is the Surah An-Nur (The Light), which is often written on the lamps used in mosques: in fact, the connection between the light and Allah is obvious. Therefore, although the quote is incomplete on this lot, maybe for the lack of space, probably the original function of this cup was liturgic.
